HC Deb 14 December 1970 vol 808 c214W
49 and 51. Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) why the Welsh Hospital Board recommended the appointment of a second consultant paediatrician to South-Wales; what area and population the aforesaid consultant is intended to serve; and if he will state the grounds upon which no paediatrician has been appointed for the Mid-Wales area;

(2) what grounds were advanced by the Welsh Hospital Board in their submission to him that the work load in Mid-Wales is insufficient for one paediatric consultant to be based in the area.

Mr. Gibson-Watt

The Welsh Hospital Board have in mind that the two consultants should share responsibility for South-West Wales and Mid-Wales with a total population of 265,000. They would work at the Carmarthen Hospital, and also provide a service at the Haverfordwest and Aberystwyth hospitals.

The Welsh Hospital Board regard their plans as the best practical way to provide a paediatric service for the area.
