§ Mr. Palmerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give the comparative figures for the increase in output per man-hour in the nationalised industries and for the private sector of industry in the period 1963 to 1969.
§ Mr. HigginsFigures are not avaliable for output per man-hour, nor for a precise split between the public and private sectors. However, output per man-year in manufacturing industries—which are predominantly in the private sector—showed a 25 per cent. increase between 1963 and 1969. Output per man-year for mining and quarrying, and for the gas, electricity and water industries—which are mainly public corporations—showed a 31 per cent. increase over the same period. No account has been taken in these figures of those industries which lie outside the scope of the index of industrial production.
