Mr. John Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what are the names of each consumer consultative council to which members are appointed by him in the electricity industry, the number of members, salaries of chairmen, number of staffs, expenses of members, and the total cost of each council;

(2) what is the number of complaints handled in the last available year by each consultative council in the electricity industry.

There are 12 electricity consultative councils in England and Wales as set out below. Each council consists of a chairman, whose salary is £2,100 per annum (paid as a part-time member of his area board), and between 20 and 30 members.

The only consumer consultative council for the steel industry to which members are appointed by us is the Iron and Steel Consumers' Council established by the Iron and Steel Act, 1949, as revived and amended by the Iron and Steel Act, 1967. There are at present a chairman and 29 members; the chairman receives no salary; there are three staff (part-time); expenses of members total some £100 p.a.; the total annual cost of the council is of the order of £4,865.
