asked the Minister of State for Defence what is the number of local recruited uniformed personnel serving in naval shore establishments or ships in the Far East station; what is the current basic rates of pay for these men; and how they compare with the previous three years.

The following table gives the total number of local recruited uniformed personnel serving in naval shore establishments or ships in the Far East station for each of the last four years. These figures include such Goan and Maltese Locally Entered Personnel as were serving in ships on the Far East Station on the dates quoted.

There were about 23,300 civilians employed in defence establishments in Scotland on 1st July, 1970. This figure includes 15,900 industrials, of whom some 3,900 were skilled. The total monthly civilian wages bill is of the order of £2.4 million in the current financial year.
