HC Deb 10 December 1970 vol 808 cc178-9W
Mr. Crouch

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will publish the latest available statistics for deaths of infants and old people from hypothermia.

Mr. Alison

For the period October, 1968, to March, 1969, the number of deaths attributed to excessive cold, hunger, thirst, and neglect in which hypothermia was a contributory cause, or to hypothermia as the underlying cause, was 92. Later figures with a detailed analysis by age groups are not available. It is not known how many deaths attributed to heart, lung or other conditions may have been accelerated by hypothermia.
