Mr. Prescott

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what progress he has made in his consideration of whether to remove the requirement that vessels between 1,600 and 3,000 tons should carry radio operators; and what consultation he has had with which maritime unions, and when, in connection therewith.

France and from France to Great Britain; what will the levels be on 1st January, 1972; and what were the levels in 1965, 1960 and 1955, respectively.

We have no intention of removing the requirement to carry radiotelegraphy equipment and radio officers from merchant ships generally between 1,600 and 3,000 tons. We have agreed such a dispensation subject to certain conditions for vessels of this size engaged in the North-East coal trade, and I will write to the hon. Member about it.
