Mr. Deakins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will put forward proposals about the future rôle of sterling as a reserve currency in the current negotiations for an enlarged Community.

Mr. Higgins

Her Majesty's Government are ready to have discussions with the Community on economic and financial questions during the enlargement negotiations. But it is not envisaged that these discussions, which will include the international position of sterling, should form part of the negotiations themselves.
