HC Deb 03 December 1970 vol 807 c470W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what financial provision has been made for winter relief in 1970–71 for the South-West Regional Development Area; and what sums were respectively allocated for the years 1965–66, 1966–67, 1967–68, 1968–69 and 1969–70.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

As part of the measures announced on 27th October, the development areas will benefit from extended assistance under the Local Employment Acts, which is estimated to build up to £25 million annually; and this will go ahead without delay in order to provide a stimulus to employment in the period immediately ahead. No separate provision has been made for a winter relief programme.

In 1967–68 the previous Government mounted a winter works programme in all the development areas. Detailed records are not available of the amount spent in the South-West. The South-West was not included in the programmes for 1968–69 and 1969–70.
