HC Deb 03 December 1970 vol 807 cc454-5W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Minister of State for Defence what is the number of adult entrants recruited into each branch of the Royal Navy in 1969 and in 1970 to the nearest date; and by how many the numbers exceeded or fell short of the recruitment target.

Mr. Kirk

An entry target is not assessed for Royal Navy Adults only, but on a combined Adult (Age 17½–33 years) and Junior "O" (Age 15¾–17½ years) basis. Royal Marines however do have an adult only entry target. The comparison tables below have been compiled on financial years, this being the period on which entry targets are calculated for both Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Mr. Kirk

There are no Naval Detention Quarters in the Far East. Naval ratings sentenced to comparatively short terms of detention serve their sentences in the Army corrective training establishments in Singapore and Hong Kong. Those with longer sentences are committed to the Naval Detention Quarters at Portsmouth. There are at present eight ratings in detention in Singapore and one in Hong Kong. One of those in Singapore is married, but his family is in the United Kingdom.
