HC Deb 03 December 1970 vol 807 cc439-40W
Mr. Jopling

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he proposes to introduce legislation to lengthen the period spent in prison of persons sentenced for murder.

Mr. Carlisle

No. A person convicted of murder must be sentenced to imprisonment for life. There is, therefore, no legal limit to the time for which he may be detained in prison. Subject to Parliament's decision last year to make permanent the abolition of capital punishment, the penalty for murder is among the matters for consideration by the Criminal Law Revision Committee in its current review of the law relating to offences against tile person, including homicide.
