Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the teacher/pupil ratio in the following types of school at the last available date, maintained primary, maintained secondary, maintained grant grammar, independent recognised as efficient, independent not recognised.

Pupil/teacher ratios in schools in England and Wales, January, 1970
Maintained primary schools 27.4
Maintained secondary schools 17.8
Direct grant grammar schools 16.6
Independent schools recognised as efficient(a) 12.8
Other independent schools(b) 13.8

Over half the schools at (a) and about a seventh of those at (b) take boarders.
