HC Deb 02 December 1970 vol 807 c379W
55. Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give figures of pupil-teacher ratios in fee-paying and non-fee-paying local authority schools, respectively, excluding special schools, in Edinburgh and Glasgow, respectively.

Mr. Edward Taylor

In Edinburgh the number of primary pupils per teacher in the former fee-paying schools was 30.2 and in the non-fee-paying schools 28.2; in secondary schools the numbers were 16.4 in fee-paying and 17.2 in non-fee-paying. In Glasgow the numbers of pupils per teacher were: primary fee-paying 35.1, non-fee-paying 35.9; secondary fee-paying 16.9, non-fee-paying 17.8. The figures relate to January, 1970, and registered teachers only. Conditionally registered and unregistered teachers are excluded, and so are visiting teachers.
