asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the number of unstaffed beds, by speciality, in Scottish hospitals; and how this compares with the years 1960 to 1969.

The information for the years 1963 to 1969 is set out in the table below. Complete figures for 1970 are not yet available and those before 1963 are not directly comparable because of a change in the basis of classification.

in the Glasgow area was 102 less than the approved bed complement, which is a little less than 2,000. The difference between the two figures is accounted for by such factors as the temporary closure of ward areas for routine maintenance and repairs, temporary alterations in the allocation of beds to specialities for operational reasons and the non-availability of staff.
