HC Deb 02 December 1970 vol 807 c423W
Mr. Ross

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he proposes to make new arrangements to hear appeals by members of the regular Armed Forces whose claim for discharge on grounds of conscientious objection is rejected by the Service authorities.

Mr. Ian Gilmour

An advisory committee is being appointed by the Lord Chancellor to hear appeals by regular Servicemen who claim a conscientious objection to further service and whose application have been turned down by the Services. This advisory committee will assume the non-statutory tasks of the Appellate Tribunal which is no longer required now that there is little possibility of statutory cases arising under the National Service Acts. It will also consider any applications which might arise from Reservists in the event of recall.

The Advisory Committee will conduct its hearings in public and will tender its advice to the Secretary of State for Defence.
