§ 63. Dr. Millerasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied with the progress made under the Clean Air Act, 1956; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. YoungerConsiderable progress has been made. Emissions of smoke, grit and dust from industrial premises have been greatly reduced; and in the central belt, for example, about 40 per cent. of houses are now covered by smoke control orders.
381WI would, naturally, like to see quicker progress with smoke control, but there is a possibility at present of temporary shortages of solid smokeless fuel.
