HC Deb 01 December 1970 vol 807 cc333-4W
Mr. Hardy

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his estimate of the number of miles of hedgerow uprooted in each of the last 10 years.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

No such estimates are available, but figures which have been published by the Nature Conservancy suggest that farmers on arable land may have removed 3,500 miles per year between 1962 and 1966, and that this figure may have fallen to 2,000 miles per year between 1966 and the present day.

A substantial mileage of hedgerows is removed for reasons unconnected with agriculture.
