Mr. William Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment have been released under licence since 1964;

(2) what was the average period of imprisonment served by prisoners sentenced for life imprisonment released on licence since 1964.

Mr. Callaghan:

Since the end of 1964, 164 life sentence prisoners have been given a release date, of whom 137 have been released. The periods served ranged from 6 months to 21 years.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions he has consulted the Lord Chief Justice prior to the release on licence of any prisoner under life sentence.

Mr. Callaghan:

In all the 147 cases in which release on licence has been authorised since the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act, 1965, came into force.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners at present serving sentences of life imprisonment have served over nine years; and what periods they have served.
