§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Attorney-General to what extent the productivity aspect of the Government's wages and incomes policy applies to the legal profession; and on how many occasions for any stated period of time he has held up increases in fees and salaries of those connected with the legal system because such increases were not within the Government's policy.
The Attorney-General:Over the last five years there has been a marked increase in nearly every branch of civil and criminal business. Regard has been had to this in considering the application of wages and incomes policy to the legal profession. The Government have not had occasion to hold up increases in remuneration, because these increases did not contravene that policy.
