HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 c338W
89. Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of Transport what action he is taking to ensure more rigid vehicle door openings on all future motor vehicles.

Mr. Bob Brown:

A possible standard for strength of sides of vehicles is under discussion in the Economic Commission for Europe's Working Party on the Construction of Vehicles.

Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of Transport what steps he is taking to ensure the maximum damage resistant design of all future motor vehicles.

Mr. Bob Brown:

We are concerned to prevent injury to vehicle occupants rather than damage to vehicles. The Regulation requiring a collapsible steering column will come into force for all new vehicles in 1972 and several other aspects of vehicle design relevant to injury reduction are under consideration.

Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of Transport what steps he is taking to ensure high impact resistant fuel tanks as part of the design of all motor vehicles.

Mr. Bob Brown:

We are discussing a possible standard with other Governments in the Economic Commission for Europe's Working Party on the Construction of Vehicles.
