HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 cc344-5W
92. Mr. Tilney

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many redundancies on Merseyside were reported for the year ended 31st March, 1970; and what her plans are to counteract this loss of jobs.

Mr. Dell:

Records of redundancies are normally kept only where 20 or more employees are involved. Those show that redundancies affecting 9,600 employees were reported in Merseyside for the year ending 31st March, 1970, and about 4,000 of which have still to take place.

The full development area benefits are available to industries providing additional employment on Merseyside and the Government will lose no opportunity of bringing the advantages of location on Merseyside to the notice of suitable firms. According to information supplied by industrialists, there are 21,000 jobs in prospect (including 15,000 for males) over the next four years in authorised new buildings and existing buildings taken over by manufacturers in the Merseyside Development Area.
