HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 c335W
88. Mr. Tilney

asked the Minister of Technology why the average cost of providing a new job on Merseyside is higher than the average in all other development areas.

Mr. Carmichael:

No information is available on the average cost of providing new jobs in the development areas. The main form of Government assistance directly linked to the provision of employment in these areas is that available under the Local Employment Acts and the amount of assistance offered depends on the nature of the schemes coming forward; up to 31st March, 1969, slightly more assistance was approved under these Acts in respect of each new job expected to arise in the Merseyside development area than in the development areas as a whole, but the difference was not significant.
