HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 cc343-4W
Mr. O'Halloran

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the present value of the Holloway and Pentonville Gaol sites on the basis of their being sold for industrial residential use.

Mrs. Shirley Williams:

It would not be possible without disproportionate use of professional resources to give these estimates with any reasonable accuracy. Unless Section 38 of the Prison Act, 1952, were amended the sale of the greater part of the Holloway site would be subject to the out-of-date valuations imposed by the Prison Act, 1877.

Mr. O'Halloran

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the original date of acquisition, the acreage and original cost of purchasing the sites for Holloway and Pentoville Prisons.

Mrs. Shirley Williams:

The following is the information:

Site Date of Acquisition Area Cost
Holloway 1879 6 acres Transferred under Prison Act 1877
Holloway 1883 3 acres £1,000
Pentonville 1840 10 acres £10,450
