HC Deb 29 April 1970 vol 800 cc329-30W
Dr. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Defence, why H.M.S. "Ship-ham " is unfit for sea immediately following her acceptance as seaworthy; and if he will pay compensation to the volunteer reservists who have obtained leave from their employments in order to put in unpaid service at sea in her this week.

Dr. David Owen:

H.M.S. " Shipham " was finally accepted as seaworthy of 28th April and is sailing today. Delays in her planned availability have occurred due to earlier trials defects and engine trouble which arose last week. A supplementary loss of earnings allowance will be paid under the normal regulations to the volunteer reservists from the time they first reported for duty.
