HC Deb 28 April 1970 vol 800 c295W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what use his Department makes of the National Giro for regular payments of salaries and pensions, and for other purposes; and, in view of the under-used capacity of the Giro, whether he will consider using it more.

Mr. Mackie

My Department regularly uses the National Giro for making 144 monthly salary payments and another 525 weekly. It also holds a National Giro account for the receipt of moneys payable by debtors who wish to use that method of payment.

My Department is aware of the facilities available from Giro both for financial transactions generally and for payments of salaries and wages in particular. Regard is had to economy, efficiency and convenience in considering alternative methods of payment.
