HC Deb 27 April 1970 vol 800 c251W
Mr. Fortescue

asked the Minister for Civil Service what use his Department makes of the National Giro for regular payments of salaries and pensions, and for other purposes; and, in view of the under-used capacity of the Giro, whether he will consider using it more.

Mr. Shore:

The National Giro is used where Members of the staff of the Civil Service Department require to receive their salaries or wages in cash or by transfer to a personal Giro Account; and for other financial transactions where payment is required in cash at a specified post office. There are no immediate plans for extending the use of the National Giro but its use is always borne in mind.
