Mr. Speed

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) by how much the price of bread, potatoes, and red meat at the latest convenient date exceeds the price ruling 12 months previously;

(2) by how much the price of bread, potatoes, and red meat at the latest convenient date exceeds the price ruling in October, 1964.

The following table gives the information available on the retail prices of these foodstuffs in October, 1964, March, 1969 and March, 1970. As the basis on which average prices of individual foodstuffs are collected was altered in 1967, only limited comparisons are possible between the October, 1964 figures and those for the two later dates.

The prices given for October, 1964 are average prices compiled from returns collected by the former Ministry of Labour in seven large towns in Great Britain. The prices for March, 1969 and 1970 are averages derived from prices collected for the purposes of the Index of Retail Prices in 200 areas in the United Kingdom by the Department of Employment and Productivity.
