asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many applications for fishing boats, under the Fisheries Development Scheme of the Highlands and Islands Development Board, have now been received from the Isle of Barra; and how many approved.

appointments of untrained teachers referred by each local authority to their respective reference panel from February, 1969 and the number disapproved by the panels for the same period.

Mr. Ross:

The information is in the table attached. I should add, however, that the period of appointment of such teachers is limited to one year and many serve for shorter periods. The number in service in December, 1969 was 498.

Three applications for boats have been received from Barra. Of these one was approved but then withdrawn, one was rejected and one is still under consideration.
