HC Deb 23 April 1970 vol 800 cc128-9W
43. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity if she will state by sex, age and employment the number of persons unemployed in the City of Aberdeen during each of the last five years and to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Dell:

I will, with permission, circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT a table of figures for March, 1970. The figures for earlier years were given to my hon. and learned Friend in reply to a similar Question on 16th April, 1969.

Following is the information:

female labour that will become available on the basis that the restrictions on hours of work for women under Part VI of the Factories Act, 1961 were removed.

Mr. Harold Walker:

None. On 31st March, 1970 about 145,000 women were covered by exemptions from restrictions on hours of work imposed by Part VI of the Factories Act, 1961, but it is impossible to estimate how many more would take employment if these restrictions were removed altogether.

Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what investigations she has made into the eflects of granting exemptions under Part VI of the Factories Act, 1961 to permit the employment of women on night shifts.

Mr. Harold Walker:

None. Exemptions allowing women to work on night shifts are normally granted for 12 months and this would allow any adverse effects on their safety, health and welfare to be taken into account when application for renewal is received. We have no evidence of any adverse effects.
