HC Deb 20 April 1970 vol 800 c63W
Mrs. Ewing

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will publish a breakdown of the expenditure on military defence, other than expenditure on the Defence Budget, for the year 1969;

(2) if he will publish the full list of items included in expenditure on military defence, other than expenditure on the Defence Budget.

Mr. Diamond:

The two main elements in expenditure on military defence, other than the Defence Budget, are distinguished in the Treasury analysis of public expenditure in "National Income and Expenditure 1969 ". Allied services includes accommodation for headquarters staff and superannuation for civilian staff. The main components of " Other " are military aid, which covers training courses for the service personnel of other countries; progress payments for United States military aircraft; and sundry items—including imputed rent and transfers within the central Government—required to adjust the Defence Budget to the basis on which public expenditure is calculated in the national income accounts.

The latest figures of out-turn relate to 1968–69 and are:

£m
Military aid 14
Allied Services 78
United States military aircraft
(1) Purchases 111
(2) Repayments —47
Other —4
152
A fuller description of the composition of other military defence appears on pages 29 and 30 of the White Paper " Public Expenditure 1968–69 to 1973–74 " (Cmnd. 4234) together with estimates of expenditure (excluding imputed rent) in 1969–70 (at 1969 Survey prices).
