HC Deb 20 April 1970 vol 800 cc34-5W
Sir W. Bromley-Davenport

asked the Minister of Transport in view of the fact that the A34 carries a volume of traffic particularly between the Midlands and Southampton, much of which is heavy goods vehicles, why a new motorway is not proposed for this important route.

Mr. Bob Brown:

The Green Paper " Roads for the Future " includes the route between Southampton and Birmingham as a strategy route for comprehensive improvement. The precise standard to which the road will be improved will be determined as detailed planning proceeds and may include sections of motorway if this proves to be appropriate following further study, although we are satisfied that the dual carriageway all purpose road schemes already carried out, in preparation or proposed between Oxford and Winchester will adequately meet future traffic needs. A feasibility study is in progress to establish road needs between Oxford and Birmingham.

Sir W. Bromley-Davenport

asked the Minister of Transport what is the estimated traffic at a representative number of points on trunk road A34 in 1980 or at the most convenient date.

Mr. Bob Brown:

As the details are somewhat complex I will write to the hon. and gallant Member.
