HC Deb 17 April 1970 vol 799 c299W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will obtain a report from the Chief Constable stating how many vehicles were available to police officers in Yorkshire and North-East Yorkshire in 1969; and how this compares with the number available in 1965.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

The information is as follows:

VEHICLES
Year Cars Motor Cycles Others* Total
1965 121 106 38 265
1969 172 12† 90 274
* This heading includes vans, specialist and support vehicles.
† This figure shows a decrease because the motor cycles previously used to patrol country beats have been replaced by small cars or vans as part of the move towards more efficient mechanised policing.
EXPENDITURE—PURCHASE OF NEW VEHICLES
Year £
1964–65* 23,663
1969–70 69,920
* This figure shows the total expenditure of the North Riding, East Riding and City of York forces, the three forces which subsequently amalgamated to become the York and North East Yorkshire Constabulary.
Note: In both cases the figures for 1969 are not strictly comparable with those for 1965 as a significant area of the former North Riding Force is now part of the Teesside Force.
