Mr. Tinn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many applications have been made by the North Riding County Council for a share of the £15 million which he has set aside for the replacement of old and grossly sub-standard premises; and for which schools they have applied.

Miss Bacon

The North Riding local education authority put forward 11 projects, at an estimated total cost of about £706,000, for an allocation from the £15 million available for improvements and replacements in the 1971–72 starts programme. The schools were:

  1. 1. Strensall (Controlled) Primary School.
  2. 2. Catterick, Le Cateau County Junior School.
  3. 3. Kirklevington Primary School.
  4. 4. Stockton-on-Forest C.E. Primary School.
  5. 5. Richmond C.E. Primary School.
  6. 6. Catterick C.E. Primary School.
  7. 7. Stokesley County Primary School.
  8. 8. Lingdale County Primary School.
  9. 9. Graham Sea Training School, Scarborough.
  10. 10. Boosbeck County Primary School.
  11. 11. Guisborough New County Primary School—(new school to replace temporary accommodation at existing schools).
I have added the first three projects to the authority's design list for 1970–71 at an estimated cost of about £200,000. The others will be considered for the preliminary list of projects for starts after 1st April, 1972.

The Teesside local education authority put forward five projects, at an estimated total cost of about £465,000, for an allocation from the £15 million available for improvements and replacements in the 1971–72 starts programme. The schools were:

  1. 1. Bolckow Road County Junior School, Grangetown.
  2. 2. Bowesfield Lane County Primary School, Stockton.
  3. 3. Newport Road County Primary School, Middlesbrough.

  5. 4. St. Hilda's C.E. Primary School, Middlesbrough.
  6. 5. Normanby County Junior School, Normanby.
I have added the first of these projects, estimated to cost just over £100,000, to the authority's design list for 1970–71. The others will be considered for the preliminary list of projects for starts after 1st April, 1972.
