Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Minister of Transport what is the total amount of capital debt which was owed to the Government by British Railways and the London Transport Board which has been written off during the last 10 years.

£1,532 million, comprising (i) £557 million of the interest-bearing commencing capital debt of the British Railways Board, together with the £705 million of suspended (non-interest-bearing) debt, written-off on 1st January, 1969, under Section 42(2) of the Transport Act, 1968, and (ii) £162 million of the London Transport Board's commencing capital debt, together with loans made to the board under Section 20 of the Transport Act, 1962, totalling £108 million, written off on 1st January, 1970, under Section 19(1) of the Transport (London) Act, 1969, as amended by the Transport (London) Amendment Act, 1969.

In addition, £487 million of the capital liabilities of the British Transport Commission, mostly attributable to borrowing to finance railway deficits, were written off on 1st January, 1963, under Section 39 of the Transport Act, 1962.
