asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT, the criteria used by valuation officers to assess the rateable value of a property.

Mr. Taverne

The rateable value of any property is based on the rent at which it might reasonably be expected to let from year to year in the open market. Valuation Officers therefore take account of any factor and any evidence which would, in their view, have a bearing on that hypothetical open market rent.
