HC Deb 08 April 1970 vol 799 c97W
Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make a statement about the increase in charges for meals and lodgings for nurses.

Dr. John Dunwoody

As part of the recent pay settlement the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council negotiated increases in the lodging charges payable by resident nursing staff. It has been the practice in the past to raise lodging charges in proportion to the salary increase but on this occasion they were raised by a lesser amount generally of the order of 10 per cent.

Charges for meals in hospital staff restaurants or cafeterias are generally based on those negotiated by the Whitley Council for Ancillary Staff. By an agreement reached last November charges were increased from 1st April by 2d. for the main meal and 1d. for other meals.
