HL Deb 08 April 1970 vol 309 c233WA
LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What research they have sponsored into the motivation (or lack of it) behind drug abuse.

THE MINISTER OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL SECURITY (BARONESS SEROTA)

The Home Office has sponsored two large-scale surveys which have attempted to find out more about the causes of drug-misuse. The results of one of these studies, conducted by Dr. R. S. P. Wiener, have recently been published under the title,Drugs and School-children. The other study, undertaken by the Government Social Survey, was based on a random population sample; the results should be available shortly.

In addition, the Drug Addiction Re-search Unit, which was established at the Maudsley Hospital by the Department of Health and Social Security in 1967, and which is wholly supported by that Department, is carrying out several descriptive studies of drug-misusers. These include a study of heroin-users in Cam-bridge and a follow-up of all heroin-users known to the Home Office in 1965.
