HC Deb 08 April 1970 vol 799 cc73-4W
Rear-Admiral Morgan-Giles

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will publish more recent figures concerning Overstretch than those contained in the Defence Review of February, 1966.

Mr. Hattersley

In 1967–68 the average annual mileage steamed by destroyers-frigates was 37,059; the annual hours under way 2,647; and the sea: harbour ratio 1:1.4.

The number of Army teeth arm units which served on unaccompanied tours in 1965 and 1969 is as follows:

1965* 1969*
(a) Emergency tours from United Kingdom 17 9⅓
(b) Emergency tours from B.A.O.R. 6
(c) Emergency tours within the theatre 11⅓† 12‡
(d) Routine unaccompanied tours 12
Total 46⅓ 30⅓
* Minor units have been counted as equivalent 10 ⅓ throughout.
† Units on accompanied tours in Far East which served unaccompanied in Borneo.
‡ Units stationed in United Kingdom which served unaccompanied in Northern Ireland.
§ 6⅔ of these 9 were in the Persian Gulf.

Notes:

The figures above indicate that of the total number of teeth arm units in the Army about one unit in every four served on an unaccompanied tour in 1969 compared with about one unit in every three in 1965. The total number of men involved in these units was 21,270 in 1965 and 15,030 in 1969.

At 31st December, 1969, there were 891 personnel on individual emergency postings, 400 in Northern Ireland and 1,700 on individual routine unaccompanied tours (1,500 in the Persian Gulf). No comparable figures are available for 1965.

In 1969, 12 R.A.F. operational formations (including aircraft detachments and R.A.F. Regiment units) underwent emergency moves to overseas theatres, involving a total of 37 aircraft.
