Mr. Ford

asked the Prime Minister if he will announce the composition of the United Kingdom delegation to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Prime Minister

The Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe will be meeting in Strasbourg on 17th April. I have appointed 18 delegates from the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The delegation this year will consist of 10 members of the Labour Party, 7 members of the Conservative Party and one member of the Liberal Party. I have also appointed a number of substitute delegates.

The appointments of Conservative and Liberal representatives and substitutes have been made on the basis of nominations by the Leaders of those parties.

The same delegation will be representing the United Kingdom Parliament at the Assembly of the Western European Union.

Representatives from the Government benches will be:

The right hon. Member for Sheffield, Hillsborough (Mr. G. Darling), who will act as Leader.

The right hon. Member for Kettering (Sir Geoffrey de Freitas).

The hon. Members for:

  • Birmingham, Northfield (Mr. Chapman).
  • Glasgow, Shettleston (Sir M. Galpern).
  • Hornchurch (Mr. Alan Lee Williams).
  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East (Mr. Rhodes).
  • Wakefield (Mr. Walter Harrison).
  • Middleton and Prestwich (Mr. Coe).
  • Luton (Mr. Howie).
and the right hon. the Earl of Listowel.

Representatives from the Conservative Party will be:

  • The right hon. and learned Member for Hexham (Mr. Rippon).
  • The right hon. Member for Streatham (Mr. Sandys).

The hon. Members for:

  • Dorset, West (Mr. Wingfield Digby).
  • Saffron Walden (Mr. Kirk)
  • Leicester, South-East (Mr. Peel)
  • Plymouth, Devonport (Dame Joan Vickers)
and the Lord St. Helens.

The representative from the Liberal Party will be:

The Lord Gladwyn.
