48. Mr. Speed

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware of the breakdown now occurring in rural bus services caused by the restriction on drivers' hours provided for in the Transport Act, 1968; and if he will now seek to amend the Act so as to give greater flexibility to operators.

We have already provided for exemptions to assist in the maintenance of essential public transport after full consultation with the bus industry as indicated in my reply of 24th February to the hon. Member. I am not aware that further action is required.—[Vol. 796, c.277.]
