Mr. Christopher Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what pension is payable under the Government's new pension scheme to a person who had national average earnings throughout his life on retirement at age 65 years in 1972, 1982 and 1992, respectively, on the basis that earnings, prices and the present retirement pension increase at the same rate as earnings have done over the past 10 years.

Mr. Ennals

The pensions awarded would be £6 17s. a week in 1972, £17 15s. a week in 1982 and £42 1s. a week in 1992. These figures include existing graduated pension and allow for an annual increase in earnings of just over 6¼ per cent.
