HC Deb 21 October 1969 vol 788 c222W
Mr. Maurice Macmillan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will show the revenue from charges payable under the Road Traffic Act, 1960, and the Road Traffic (Payments for Treatment) (England and Wales) Order, 1968, for the years 1960 to 1968, respectively; and whether he will express these as a percentage of the total cost of medical treatment for road traffic casualties for each of those years.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will give the approximate total cost of medical treatment for road traffic casualties for each of the years 1960 to 1968, respectively.

Mr. Crossman

The income received by National Health Service hospitals in England was as follows:

Year £
1960–61 430,000
1961–62 458,000
1962–63 484,000
1963–64 509,000
1964–65 546,000
1965–66 555,000
1966–67 549,000
1967–68 575,000
1968–69 579,000
Figures of the total cost of medical treatment for road traffic casualties are not available, but it is estimated that the cost to the hospital service is currently about £10 million a year.
