asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present total of the National Debt; and what proposals he has to pay it off.

Mr. Taverne

The total National Debt at the year ending 31st March, 1969, was approximately £33,983 million: this was £211 million lower than the total outstanding at the end of the previous year. The Government will be a net repayer of debt on an even larger scale in the financial year 1969–70.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the Commissioners of the National Debt last met officially.
