HC Deb 13 October 1969 vol 788 cc24-5W
67. Mr. Crawshaw

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will make a statement on the life and maintenance costs of concrete roads vis-a-vis other forms of road surfacing.

Mr. Bob Brown

The life of a road, whether of concrete or other form of road surfacing, depends not only on the surfacing but also on the overall strength and durability of the full pavement design adopted.

Maintenance costs of concrete and bituminous surfacings on heavily trafficked roads are related mainly to the preservation of skid resistance properties, and depend upon the intervals between treatments and the methods used.

There is as yet insufficient data on the costs of maintaining various types of road surfacing over an extended period to enable a judgment to be made of the relative overall costs.
