§ Sir R. Russellasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will introduce legislation to ensure that women have equal opportunity with men to obtain places in medical schools on merit in future, instead of being restricted to a proportion of places as in the past.
§ Mr. FowlerThe admission of students is the responsibility of the universities and medical schools, and legislation would not be appropriate. Medical schools will no doubt bear in mind the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Medical Education concerning the admission of women candidates.
