asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will state, from information available to him from international sources, the starting salary, basic salary after five years, the basic salary after 10 years and the average salary of a non-graduate teacher in Great Britain, the United States of America, France, Germany and Sweden in the latest year for which figures are available.

The Science, Medical and Agricultural Research Councils give support, in their own establishments and in grants for research in universities, where work is also supported on the general, University Grants Committee, grant. The Research Councils keep constantly under review the ways in which this subject can be most effectively advanced and in particular they recognise the importance of selective support. The establishment of a national centre, however, would be likely to duplicate work being successfully carried on elsewhere.
