§ 39. Mr. David Watkinsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what authority officers of the Metropolitan Police Force were instructed to allow hon. Members to approach the House only on foot during the State opening of Parliament, on Tuesday, 28th October, 1969.
§ Mr. CallaghanSince 1938 the practice followed by the police has been that immediately prior to the Sovereign's arrival, hon. Members' cars should set down occupants in Bridge Street. Their orders also require however, that all possible facilities should be given to hon. Members' vehicles to pass at any point up to the latest possible moment understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the police assisted an hon. Member to arrive at the House in his car on 28th October last when the Royal Procession was already in sight.
