HC Deb 11 November 1969 vol 791 cc72-3W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what research has been conducted in this country on the effects of cyclamates as food additives; to what extent his decision to ban the use of cyclamates was based on research in this country; what research is being conducted on other artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hoy

Research relating to cyclamates has been carried out at a number of research institutions in this country. Work at the British Industrial Biological Research Association is continuing. The decision to ban the use of cyclamates was based primarily on the result of experimental work in the United States. A considerable amount of evidence obtained from experiments carried out in this country and abroad is available about the safety in use of saccharin, and further long-term studies are to be undertaken in the United States and Canada.
