asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the total cost to the National Health Service of nurses supplied by private agencies in each of the past five years ; and what are the estimates for the current year.

Payments to nurses' agencies totalled approximately £650,000 in 1965–66 and in 1966–67, £700,000 in 1967–68 and £1,050,000 in 1968–69. Figures for earlier years are not available and expenditure for the current year cannot be forecast.
