HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 cc18-9W
54. Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Minister of Technology what are the total stocks of smokeless fuel at the present time; how these compare with the stocks at the same period last year; what are the stocks in each region; and what estimate assuming a normal winter he has made of demand in each region and in total.

Mr. Alan Williams

The latest estimate of existing stocks of solid smokeless fuels suitable for domestic use is about 1½ million tons; some 2 million tons were available at the corresponding time last year. The expected demand for these fuels, if there is a normal winter, will total about 4¾ million tons and, overall, supplies should be adequate for this. The availability of fuels in particular areas is a matter for the trade.

Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Minister of Technology whether he is satisfied that the supply of smokeless fuels will be adequate throughout the coming winter; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Williams

There may be difficulties in obtaining certain grades of solid smokeless fuels in some areas, particularly if the weather is severe, but generally supplies should be adequate.
