HC Deb 03 November 1969 vol 790 cc28-9W
Mrs. Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to ensure that an adequate number of modern theatres are built in Scotland to replace the various theatres under threat of closure.

Miss Jennie Lee

The policy of the Arts Council is to respond to local initiatives for the building o: new theatres. Grants totalling over £150,000 have been promised for new theatres at Arbroath, Dumbarton, Glenrothes, Kirkwall, Motherwell and St. Andrews, while there are proposals before the Scottish Arts Council for new theatres in Stirling, Glasgow, Dundee and Gatehouse. Grants have also been made by the Scottish Arts Council towards improvements at the Kings Theatre, Glasgow and the Pitlochry Festival Theatre. It is for local authorities to decide whether or not to purchase commercially-owned theatres which are in danger of being closed.
